Borana Lodge
-Laikipia Plateau
Borana Lodge is on the 35,000 acre Borana
Ranch, a working cattle ranch, which is
situated on the Laikipia Plateau to the
north of Mount Kenya, 28 kms from the
equator and adjacent to the Lewa Wildlife
Conservancy.
This exclusive ranch sits in a valley that
meanders out of Laikipia Platue onto the
Samburu Plains of northern Kenya. It was
here that the Disney animators came to draw
their inspiration for the Lion King - for
many people the Borana landscape is Africa.
Intimate and exclusive, Borana Lodge is
perched on the slope of a hidden valley
overlooking a waterhole where animals come
to drink.
Activities
Wildlife, Game Drives, Walking /Hiking,
Horse Trails, Honeymoon, Photography,
Birding, Swimming pool
Attractions
Borana is devoted to conserving wildlife
in its natural habitat. The whole ranch is
available for your exploration and guests
are welcome to join in any of the ongoing
activities, from tracking collared elephant
and lion to visiting one of the many
community conservation projects, which are
supported by the ranch. Near the ranch is
the Sergoi Rhino Sanctuary with a population
of almost 40 black and white rhino.

Facilities
Built mainly from fallen cedar, and
virtually wholly constructed from natural
materials, the lodge blends with the craggy
stone outcrops of the escarpment - indeed
they are incorporated into the building in
several places - and almost appears to grow
organically from the hillside.
The rock hyrax that live in the rocky
overhangs certainly find the lodge very much
to their taste, and appear to be checking
out the guests as they sip their morning
coffee! Vast windows in the drawing room
allow wide panoramic views across the arid
grasslands and all the interior spaces use
and reflect the light and space of the
surrounding plains. Decoration also
emphasizes theuses of natural and neutral
tones, African prints, and a variety of
polished woods, including a wonderful
rosewood table, leathers and butter-soft
suedes. Much care has been taken with the
living space. Not only is the architecture
profoundly user friendly but all the small
details have also been considered.
The six stone cottages that surround the
main lodge are beautifully equipped yet
still allow an authentic wilderness
experience. Here you will find the most
luxurious of beds and bathrooms: lovely
views, the prettiest of fabrics, beautiful
rustic artefacts, old Indian teak
doorframes, fireplaces, robes in muted
African prints, scented bath essence...and
so much more. Borana's exclusivity enables
the staff to give a truly efficient and
individual service. Early morning calls come
with tea or coffee and muffins warm from the
oven. Lunch is a wonderfully generous still
life of a buffet in the stunningly sited
swimming pool area. Dinners are slightly,
but not much, more formal.
Farm grown fruit and vegetables, excellent
meats, and freshly baked breads are expertly
prepared and elegantly served.
Additional Information
Morning, afternoon and night game drives
are available at Borana. As most come
particularly to see the game, they are
offered plenty of superbly guided
opportunities and the excellent bird, animal
and plant lists in the cottages are also
fascinating. Additionally, Borana offers
horse riding, guided walks, fishing, a fly
camp on Mount Olololowke, bird shoots, day
trips to Samburu and the Aberdares, a shop
stocked with gorgeous artefacts, and a
sublimely relaxing ambience.
